Europe Will Start COVID-19 Vaccinations on Dec. 27

December 21, 2020

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced last week that EU countries will start COVID-19 vaccinations with the two-dose Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine on Dec. 27.

After heavy lobbying from EU leaders, especially from Germany where BioNTech is based, the European Medicines Agency rescheduled a review of the vaccine by its human medicines committee from Dec. 29 to Dec. 21. The committee is expected to recommend a Conditional Marketing Authorization that will allow vaccinations to begin.

Gearing up for the immunization programs, the EC last week exercised its option with Pfizer/BioNTech for an extra 100 million vaccine doses, for a total of 300 million — enough to vaccinate one third of the EU’s population.
