Moderna Hopes to Increase COVID-19 Vaccine Vial Capacity by 50 Percent

February 8, 2021

Moderna said it is in discussions with the FDA over a proposal to fill its COVID-19 vaccine vials with up to 50 percent more doses to help increase the pace of inoculations in the U.S.

If the FDA approves the company’s proposal to increase the number of doses from 10 to up to 15 per vial, it will enable Moderna to ship more doses per a given number of vials in an order, the company said.

Moderna President Stephen Hoge explained that one of the capacity constraints beyond the amount of drug product available is how many vials that can be filled in a given time period.
