COVID-19 Blood Clot Risks Much Higher for Nonvaccinated Patients, Oxford Says

April 19, 2021

Oxford University researchers have found that the risks of rare blood clots in the brain are significantly higher for COVID-19 patients than for vaccinated individuals.

The risk of cerebral venous thrombosis following COVID-19 infection is approximately “100 times greater than normal, several times higher than it is post-vaccination or following influenza,” the Oxford researchers found in a study of data from more than 500,000 COVID-19 patients.

The study evaluated real-world data on the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine, which has been linked to very rare but life-threatening blood clots, as well as the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines.
