FDA Approves Johnson & Johnson’s Myopia Management Contact Lens

May 13, 2021

Johnson & Johnson Vision has earned premarket approval from the FDA for its Acuvue Abiliti overnight therapeutic lenses for managing myopia, or nearsightedness.

The company said that the contact lenses, which come in spherical and toric (a geometric shape like a slice of a donut) designs as well as an astigmatism version, are now the only FDA-approved lenses that reshape the cornea for managing myopia.

The lenses are worn overnight and are designed to correct various combinations of corneal shapes and refractive errors. They are fitted using software that measures the shape of the cornea, refractive error and other factors.
