Catalent and Anthem Partner With Civica Rx to Boost Generic Drugs Supply

June 18, 2021

Civica Rx, a two-year-old nonprofit organization launched to address generic drug shortages in the U.S., announced that drugmaker Catalent and health insurance giant Anthem are joining the organization’s new CivicaScript operating unit that focuses on making generic drugs.

Catalent, based in Somerset, N.J., has entered into a long-term partnership with CivicaScript to produce widely prescribed generic medicines, Civica Rx said.

Anthem, which operates affiliated health plans that provide health coverage to more than 43 million people in the U.S., is joining Civica Rx’s co-founders, the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and 17 independent and locally operated Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies, in the venture.

Lehi, Utah-based Civica Rx is a collaborator in a U.S. government-funded partnership with Phlow, which secured a $354 million contract in May 2020 from the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority to manufacture essential medications, including starting raw ingredients, active pharmaceutical ingredients and finished dosage forms.
