Former FDA Commissioner Hahn Joins Company That Launched Moderna

June 18, 2021

Former FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn has joined Flagship Pioneering, the science-focused venture capital firm that helped launch Moderna.

An oncologist who served as the FDA’s 24th commissioner, Hahn joined Flagship’s senior leadership team as chief medical officer for its preemptive medicine investments.

Hahn served as FDA commissioner from 2019 to 2021 under President Trump, stepping down as Trump’s presidency ended. Prior to that, Hahn was the chief medical executive at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Launched in 2000, Flagship Pioneering, based in Cambridge, Mass., has invested $2.4 billion toward launching new companies, fostering about 100 scientific ventures. Flagship currently has funding relationships with Denali Therapeutics, Indigo, Moderna, Rubius Therapeutics and Sana Biotechnology.
