Moderna Prepares for Vaccine Booster Shots with Two New Production Lines

Moderna is adding two new production lines at its COVID-19 vaccine manufacturing facility in Norwood, Mass., in order to speed production of booster shots.

The extra lines at the Norwood facility will increase production capacity by 50 percent, the company said. Moderna plans to increase overall COVID-19 vaccine production from approximately 1 billion doses this year to 3 billion doses in 2022 through manufacturing expansions in the U.S. and abroad.

Early this month, Moderna filed a Biologics License Application with the FDA for use of the two-dose messenger RNA vaccine in adults 18 years and up. Currently, the vaccine is only authorized for emergency use, which limits the company’s ability to market it directly to consumers.
