Pfizer Says Its COVID-19 Vaccine Is Effective Against Delta Variant

Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine is highly effective against the Delta variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, but its effect is “modestly reduced” relative to other strains, a company spokesperson said.

The claim lines up with recently released trial data that showed the vaccine was effective against all variants including Delta, which is fast becoming the dominant strain of the virus worldwide.

A real-world study of vaccinated individuals who received the Pfizer shot showed that it offered 87.9 percent protection against the Delta variant. This compares with a 95 percent efficacy in phase 3 trials in protecting against the original virus.
