WHO Director-General Rebukes Vaccine Manufacturers

July 14, 2021

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, has criticized COVID-19 vaccine developers, including Pfizer and Moderna, for prioritizing booster shots to high-income nations instead of addressing gaps in the global vaccine supply.

“The priority now must be to vaccinate those who have received no doses and protection,” Ghebreyous said, calling on drugmakers to send shots to the Covax vaccine-sharing program, the Africa Vaccine Acquisition Task Team and to low- and middle-income countries.

Ghebreyous praised AstraZeneca for being a leader in vaccine licensing and he urged other vaccine developers to provide knowledge and technology transfers to boost worldwide production.
