FDA Set to OK Third COVID-19 Vaccine Dose for Immunocompromised People

August 12, 2021

The FDA is poised to authorize a booster dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for immunocompromised people as soon as today.

The agency is expected to update the Emergency Use Authorizations (EUAs) for both shots, which currently call for a two-dose schedule.

The FDA would not confirm the timing of the announcement late on Wednesday, only confirming that it is “evaluating potential options on this issue” along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will meet on Friday to discuss whether immunocompromised individuals should receive additional boosters.

Individuals with weakened immune systems include cancer and transplant patients who are taking certain immunosuppressive drugs, those with HIV/AIDS; and those with inherited diseases that affect the immune system. ― Jason Scott
