mRNA COVID-19 Shots Are Safe for People with Allergic Histories, Study Finds

October 29, 2021

People with a history of severe allergic reactions are not particularly reactive to mRNA COVID-19 vaccines.

That’s according to a new JAMA Network Open study of employee vaccinations within the Mass General Brigham healthcare system.

In the study of 52,998 healthcare employees, just 11.6 percent of people with a history of severe allergic reactions reported an allergic reaction after getting dose one or two of a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine, compared with 4.7 percent of employees without this history. The highest risks were for hives and angioedema.

The researchers concluded that the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are safe to receive for eligible individuals.
