WHO Grants Emergency Use Listing of Bharat Biotech’s COVID-19 Vaccine

November 4, 2021

The World Health Organization (WHO) has granted an emergency use listing to Bharat Biotech’s COVID-19 vaccine, Covaxin, allowing the shot’s inclusion in the WHO-backed COVAX vaccine-sharing program.

The WHO’s expert panel said Covaxin demonstrated a 78 percent efficacy against the coronavirus 14 days after receiving a second dose and noted the shot is “extremely suitable for low- and middle-income countries due to easy storage requirements.”

Covaxin, which is produced from an inactivated form of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that causes COVID-19 infections, is authorized as a two-dose regimen for people 18 years and older.
