White House Doubles Pfizer COVID-19 Pill Order
The White House has doubled its order of Pfizer’s COVID-19 antiviral pill Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir, ritonavir), bringing the new total to 20 million treatment courses.
President Biden struck an optimistic tone in announcing the expanded contract, calling the pills “a game-changer” because of their potential to “dramatically alter the impact of COVID-19.”
But the initial supply will be very limited. Pfizer estimates that only about 10 million treatment courses will be delivered by the end of June with the remaining 10 million not expected to be delivered until the end of September.
