U.S. Orders 66 Million Doses of Moderna’s Bivalent COVID-19 Booster Vaccine

August 1, 2022

The U.S. government has ordered 66 million doses of Moderna’s bivalent COVID-19 vaccine booster candidate in a contract worth up to $1.74 billion.

The booster candidate contains the company’s original Spikevax COVID-19 vaccine but is also targeted against the Omicron BA.4/5 strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 infections.

Moderna’s bivalent booster has yet to be authorized by the FDA for emergency use.

Under the contract, the government also has the option of ordering an additional 234 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine boosters.
