Penumbra’s Lightning Flash Cleared for Large Blood Clot Removal

The FDA has granted clearance to Penumbra’s Lightning Flash, a mechanical thrombectomy system, to remove large blood clots in veins and lungs.

The system includes a catheter and algorithm to detect blood clots and blood flow, removing blood clots quickly and minimizing potential blood loss, the company said.

“With this latest advancement, physicians are more likely to adopt mechanical thrombectomy because a broad spectrum of blood clots can be removed much quicker and less invasively than current interventional or surgical methods,” said Penumbra CEO Adam Elsesser.
