Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Cleared to Monitor Irregular Heart Rhythms

May 12, 2023

The FDA has cleared a Samsung Galaxy Watch feature that will proactively monitor heart rhythms for irregularities suggestive of atrial fibrillation and notify the user.

This feature is being added to the watch’s BioActive Sensor app as an expansion to the app’s preexisting electrocardiogram monitoring capabilities. The feature will record data in the background, and report both abnormally high and low heart rates.

While irregular heart rhythms are considered early warning signs for many major cardiovascular issues, the company said, the sensor can alert asymptomatic patients of possible risk.

Samsung said it will introduce the feature on the new One UI 5 Galaxy Watch, before expanding to include previous editions of its watches.
