Abbott’s Eterna Spinal Cord Stimulation Tech Sees Approval for Expanded MRI Use

May 15, 2023

The FDA’s approval of expanded labeling of Abbott’s Eterna spinal cord stimulation tech includes a wider selection of leads to allow patients with spinal cord stimulation systems (SCS) to receive full body MRI scans.

The Eterna spinal cord stimulation system allows for faster scan times and higher quality images under the expanded labeling, the company says adding that “93% of surgeons consider MRI accessibility an important to essential factor when determining the best SCS system for their patients.”

Surgeons place a high value on systems in which the leads can be placed in the epidural space while still remaining capable of conducting MRI scans anywhere on the body, the company explained.

MRIs are often required to assess the progression of illnesses such as cancer and multiple sclerosis in people with spinal cord stimulation systems.
