AI Safety Transparency Tackled in White House Executive Order

November 1, 2023

In a move with ramifications for medical devicemakers, the Biden administration issued an executive order Monday targeting powerful AI systems, requiring developers to share safety test results and other critical information with the U.S. government.

In accordance with the Defense Production Act, the order mandates that companies developing an AI model that “poses a serious risk to national security, national economic security, or national public health and safety must notify the federal government when training the model, and must share the results of all red-team safety tests.”

The White House also claims the order will protect against the risks of using AI to create dangerous biological materials by establishing a set of strong standards for biological synthesis screening, and that federal agencies that fund life-science projects must generate these standards as a condition of receiving government funds.
