Biden Offers Drug Supply Chain Fixes, but Think Tank Says Government Isn’t Doing Enough

November 30, 2023

The troubled U.S. drug supply chain remains in the spotlight with President Biden announcing nearly 30 new actions to help bolster supply chain resilience, including convening a new White House council focused on the issue and deploying the Defense Production Act to bolster U.S. manufacturers’ ability to make more essential medicines.

The White House also said HHS would kick in $35 million for domestic production of materials for sterile injectable medications.

But while the new moves from the executive branch seem promising, the Manhattan Institute think tank put out a statement this month saying efforts from Congress to shore up the supply chain have thus far been abysmal.

The group asserted that options Congress is considering are “meager solutions,” and that legislators should instead allow imports of high-risk generic drugs in shortage from trusted foreign countries and require better accounting of FDA’s efforts to identify and stem shortages.
