Patent Battle Freezes U.S. Sales of Apple Watches

Apple is pausing U.S. sales of its new Series 9 and Ultra 2 Apple watches due to a dispute with Masimo, a monitoring technologies medtech company, that alleges certain Apple watches violate its heart rate and blood oxygen monitor patents.

In October, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) banned the importation of Apple watches with light-based oximetry technology that monitors heart rate and blood oxygen because the watches violate two patents held by Masimo. The ITC decision allows review by President Biden — who could disapprove the ITC decision. Should the President let the ITC decision stand, Apple has 60 days to appeal.
