HHS to Use Defense Production Act to Shore Up Drug Supply Chain

January 10, 2024

The Biden Administration has signaled that it wants HHS to begin using the Defense Production Act (DPA) of 1950 to allow the government to invest in domestic manufacturing of essential medicines to shore up the drug supply chain.

In a recent memorandum to the secretary of HHS, President Biden told the agency to use its power to increase the domestic production of essential drugs, biologics, medical countermeasures and drug ingredients that are facing a shortage under the DPA.

The plan is part of Biden’s ongoing plan to beef up the U.S. drug supply chain. In November, he announced nearly 30 new actions to help bolster supply chain resilience, including convening a new White House council focused on the issue.
