Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Adds Sleep Apnea Tool

February 21, 2024

Samsung Electronics snagged a De Novo authorization for a sleep apnea detection feature powered by its Galaxy Watch. Approved in Korea in 2023, the new feature will be available on the Samsung Health Monitor app later this year, the company said.

According to Samsung, the sleep apnea feature can sense blood oxygen dips associated with a temporary cessation of breathing. Sensitive enough to detect moderate-severe obstructive sleep apnea, it’s intended for users over age 22 who may be concerned about the disorder, but don’t have a diagnosis.

Using the app for two four-hour periods of sleep during the same 10-day period should provide enough data for users to have an informed conversation with a healthcare provider.
