Diabetes Diagnosis and Management Could be Improved With Digital Health Tools

Digital health technologies are uniquely effective tools for screening, diagnosing, and managing both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, according to stakeholders who commented in response to the FDA’s request for input on digital health technologies (DHT) for detecting prediabetes and undiagnosed type 2 diabetes.

A branch of CDRH’s 2022-2025 Strategic Priority on advancing health equity, the request for information snagged 19 comments from individuals, drugmakers, and patient advocacy groups.

DHTs are already being used extensively in this space, respondents noted. Among the most notable are the continuous glucose monitor and insulin pump, both used to continuously deliver insulin and monitor blood glucose levels, according to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Where new DHTs could really make a difference, the foundation said, is in pre-diagnostic screening and detection among at-risk populations, and those with restricted healthcare access.
