OBESITY DEVICE WINS FINANCING

July 20, 2006

A St. Paul startup company is bulking up to take on Medtronic Inc. and others in what is becoming one of the hottest areas in the medical industry — treatments for obesity. EnteroMedics Inc. said Wednesday it has closed a $45.2 million venture-capital round, most of which will be used to finance clinical trials to test its new neuromodulation implant to help obese people lose weight. The financing, which was led by InterWest Partners of Menlo Park, Calif., is the largest venture-capital deal in Minnesota this year, and the third-largest medical-device deal in the country, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers.
