U.S. DONATES MORE THAN $1.1 MILLION TO ETHIOPIA FOR AIDS

August 8, 2006

The U.S. government, through the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), has donated more than $1.1 million worth of equipment, supplies and drugs for HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment to the Ethiopia's Ministry of Health.

The materials were provided to strengthen Ethiopia's program of antiretroviral treatment that currently covers 41,000 HIV-positive individuals through a PEPFAR collaboration. The donation includes diagnostic devices, microscopes, sterilizers, water distillers, centrifuges, incubators, computers and drugs.

Through PEPFAR, the U.S. works with local and international civil society organizations, universities and private-sector institutions. PEPFAR's goal for Ethiopia is to provide treatment to 210,000 people with HIV/AIDS, to render care and support services to 1.05 million people and to prevent the occurrence of 550,000 new HIV infections by 2008.
