TWO FIRMS BATTLE IT OUT OVER PATENTS FOR LASER HAIR-REMOVAL SYSTEMS

August 14, 2006

Two makers of laser hair-removal systems have filed patent infringement suits against each other.

Palomar Medical Technologies and Candela Corporation Aug. 10 announced they had filed their suits in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

Candela asserts that Palomar's StarLux system infringed on two of its patents, and that Palomar's Q-YAG 5 Q-Switched laser system infringes on another Candela patent.

Palomar said Candela's light-based hair-removal systems, including the GentleLase and GentleYag, infringe on its '844 patent. The claims Palomar has asserted against Candela include the same ones it asserted successfully against Cutera, Palomar said.
