Guidant Sues Participants in Contract Bid

Medical devicemaker Guidant accuses the North Broward Hospital District of hiring a consulting firm that steered a multimillion-dollar contract for pacemakers and other cardiac devices to a company the consultant manages. Indianapolis, Ind.-based Guidant's sales unit sued the district, the consultant, two competitors and the company that won the contract, alleging they engaged in secret negotiations outside the formal bid process.
