Health Minister Considering Ban on Bulk Drug Exports to U.S.

May 11, 2005

Health Minister Ujjal Dosanjh says he's considering a ban on bulk exports of drugs to the United States in order to head off potential drug shortages in Canada. Dosanjh said there is a real possibility the U.S. Congress will soon pass legislation allowing unlimited pharmaceutical imports from Canada, which would bring overwhelming demand for Canadian medicines. "We will certainly look at the possibility of bulk exports to the United States and see if they can be banned," the minister said in an interview Tuesday.
