Publishing Policies Vary Among Research Institutions, Survey Says

June 10, 2005

Survey responses from more than 100 medical schools indicate wide variations in their principles when it comes to researching new drugs and deeming what is acceptable material for publication in medical journals.

The researchers, from the Harvard School of Public Health and the University of Massachusetts, found that 69 percent of respondents reported that competition for research funds created pressure on administrators to compromise language in contracts with sponsors. Of this group, 24 percent described the pressure as "great," and 53 percent described it as "moderate."

The survey results, reported in The New England Journal of Medicine, also indicated the majority of medical schools, more than 85 percent, reported they would not approve provisions giving industry sponsors the authority to decide what data are published in research articles.
