Arena Pharmaceuticals Receives Patent for Drug Screening Methods

June 10, 2005

Arena Pharmaceuticals has received a U.S. patent, titled "Human G Protein-Coupled Receptors and Modulators Thereof for the Treatment of Metabolic-Related Disorders," that protects certain drug screening methods that utilize the niacin receptor.

The invention set forth in the newly issued patent and Arena's chemistry capabilities represented the basis for initiating the cardiovascular disease collaboration with Merck. The companies signed a multiyear research and licensing agreement in 2002 to collaborate on validating and developing therapeutics on three orphan G protein-coupled receptors.
