NEW DEVICE COULD HELP TREAT ANEURYSMS

August 15, 2005

Six engineering students at Stanford University have developed what could be a revolutionary new way to treat a cerebral aneurysm, an often fatal affliction that affects up to 8 percent of the U.S. population. The students spent 18 months working to create the device, dubbed Embolune, which is designed to treat a particular type of cerebral aneurysm -- called a wide-neck aneurysm -- that accounts for about 30 percent of all cranial aneurysms.
