UK SCIENTISTS CLAIM STEM CELL ADVANCES

August 23, 2005

A team of private sector scientists based in Scotland has announced a breakthrough in stem cell research, with potentially significant implications for the treatment of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. The experiment reportedly produced the first pure cells harvested from a human stem cell.

The Edinburgh-based firm notes that previous attempts to grow pure brain cells had resulted in "contaminated" samples which were discarded. Scientists based in the UK have announced a string of developments in the field in recent months, although it is unclear if and when such breakthroughs will lead to new treatments. Academic researchers announced the creation of a cloned human embryo earlier this year.
