MEDTRONIC INTRODUCES NEW PACING LEAD

August 24, 2005

Medical devicemaker Medtronic announced the U.S. introduction of its SelectSecure Lead System, designed to enable physicians to reach selective sides of the right heart.

The system utilizes the SelectSecure Model 3830 pacing lead -- a thin, bipolar lead that connects the heart to an implanted pacemaker, allowing the device to monitor and pace the heart. Its lumenless design, the company said, "allows for flexibility and a smaller body size without sacrificing insulation thickness." The lead also slowly releases a steroid (beclomethasone dipropionate) into the body for a short time after implantation to help the tissue conduct electricity more easily. The lead can be positioned in select locations in either the right atrium or ventricle using the company's SelectSite Deflectable Catheter System.

Medtronic said the SelectSecure system can be used with pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices, including CRT-pacemakers and CRT-defibrillators.
