EUROPEAN OFFICIAL CALLS FOR CUTS TO DEVICE REGULATION

September 19, 2005

European Commissioner for Competition Neelie Kroes says that the European Commission is planning to simplify and possibly end so-called unnecessary laws, including regulations of medical devices.

In a recent speech to the European Liberal Democrat City Forum in London, Kroes said: "We are working to identify legislation which careful assessment shows to be disproportionately burdensome and complex for EU citizens and businesses in relation to the public interests safeguarded." She added: "We are thinking of rules on issues such as medical devices, waste disposal, type approval of motor vehicles, VAT and company law."
