STUDY SUPPORTS USE OF LASER TO TREAT PROSTATE ENLARGEMENT

September 26, 2005

Use of the GreenLight laser system helps treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), enlargement of the prostate, according to a recent report in the Journal of Urology.

The Mayo Clinic study found a reduction in obstruction of the urinary tract when the GreenLight laser was used to photoselectively vaporize enlarged prostate tissue. All of the 94 patients in the study showed improvement in symptoms of BPH, the report found. Laserscope developed the GreenLight system.

The study's authors say that the report is the first peer-review of the procedure and proves its longterm usefulness. "The results of our study demonstrate significant and sustainable improvements in the outcomes of patients suffering from obstructive BPH," said Reza Malek, lead author of the study and Professor Emeritus of Urology.
