FLIGHT AID HELPS IMPROVE HEART TRANSPLANTS

September 30, 2005

European scientists have adapted a technology used to measure airflow over aircraft wings to measure how well blood flows through medical implants, a method that could improve the efficiency of a variety of life-saving devices. The particle image velocimetry system, or PIV, originally was developed to improve the aerodynamics of aircraft wings, but researchers at D'Appolonia SpA in Genoa, Italy, combined the PIV hardware with advanced image processing and numerical analysis software over a parallel computing subsystem to adapt it for medical use.
