ALPHARMA TO SELL GENERIC DRUG UNIT FOR $810 MLN

Alpharma Inc. (ALO.N: Quote, Profile, Research) on Monday said it would sell its generic drugs business to Iceland-based Actavis Group HF (ACT.IC: Quote, Profile, Research) for $810 million in cash, in a deal that has already been approved by the boards of both companies. Alpharma, based in Fort Lee, New Jersey, said it expects the deal to close in the fourth quarter of this year and believes it will be accretive to 2006 earnings, but the company did not specify by how much.
