OB/GYN'S INVENTION HITS THE MARKET

November 15, 2005

Dr. Victor Vines is realizing his dream of bringing a better medical device to market after testifying in a medical malpractice case. The case focused on the use of a vacuum to help deliver a baby. Vacuums are now more commonly used than forceps and are used in about 10% to 12% of deliveries, Vines said. "It would have been a lot easier to help defend the doctor if there had been some real-time documentation," he said. About five years ago the Dallas OB/GYN began the process of intellectual property searches and patent searches on whether anyone had developed a monitoring system that tracks use of vacuums in deliveries. His exhaustive searches found nothing so he patented the idea and technology and now is beginning to see the fruits of his labor.
