DEVELOP CHEAPER DRUGS, KALAMS TELLS PHARMA INDUSTRY

President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Thursday urged the pharmaceutical industry to develop "cost-effective drugs" that were "affordable for the common Indian". Kalam was addressing a large group of scientists of the Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals after visiting the company's antibiotics facility near Sriperumbudur, 50 km south of here. Applauding Indian chemists who had developed drugs through indigenous efforts, he said locally designed and developed medicines show that Indian scientists had the "courage to innovate and invent".
