RESEARCHERS BEGIN STUDY OF NEW BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSTIC

December 9, 2005

Breast Care Specialists breast cancer clinic will participate with several other facilities in clinical research of a new breast cancer diagnostic meant to supplement mammography.

The study will attempt to determine if the addition of this new electronic scanning technology, known as the DOBI Medical ComfortScan system, is more effective than mammography alone in determining the level of suspicion of tumor malignancy. If so, the device could eliminate the need to perform invasive biopsies on many patients.

The device shines light through breast tissue and then uses a camera to capture several images to identify abnormal clusters of blood vessels potentially surrounding a tumor.
