FRESH ATTEMPT TO PROTECT POOR CHILDREN FROM AIDS

February 16, 2006

Senior drug company representatives are to meet officials soon in an effort to tackle the lack of affordable and appropriate AIDS drugs for children in the developing world, reports The Financial Times (UK, 02/11). Officials at the Department for International Development said they were preparing talks to address international concerns that few drugs existed specifically to treat children or prevent them contracting HIV. Drugs companies have long worked on AIDS drugs for adults, driven by the high prices they can charge in developed countries, but they have little economic motivation to adapt medicines for infected children, most of whom live in low-income countries.
