NEW CZECH REGULATIONS WORRY EU PHARMACISTS

February 27, 2006

Regional pharmacists organisation the Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union (PGEU) has expressed its concern over changes to prescribing practices proposed by the Czech health ministry.

The changes include allowing doctors, as well as pharmacists, to prescribe drugs and vaccines; increasing the range of outlets, including the internet, that can sell OTC products; and reducing the maximum pharmacy profit margin.

The PGEU is worried that the reforms -- which are reportedly against European conventions -- will compromise the quality and sustainability of Czech healthcare.

In January, Czech pharmacists went on strike over the changes, and were especially angered by the margin cut.
