MARTEK PICKED BY ROCHE TO HELP MAKE FLU DRUG

March 16, 2006

Martek Biosciences Corp. is aiding Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche in its efforts to boost production of Tamiflu, the antiviral drug being stockpiled by governments around the world to defend against an avian flu pandemic. Columbia-based Martek, best known for its use of microalgaes to manufacture nutritional oils for food, said Thursday it had been picked by Roche to produce shikimic acid, a key ingredient in Tamiflu.
