HIV/AIDS: DESIGNER MEDICINES TO THE RESCUE

April 4, 2006

When AIDS was first discovered in the early 1980s, people who were diagnosed of the infection seldom live longer than a year or two. The reason being that very little or nothing was known of this killer virus. However, advances in understanding the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and how it causes AIDS have helped scientists to develop an effective arsenal of drugs that, when used in combination, can help many people with HIV disease to live longer and healthier lives. The addition of a new class of anti-HIV drugs to a combination of therapies has also helped in no small way in achieving a more healthy life.
