DEVICE COOLS HEART PATIENTS DURING SURGERY

May 1, 2006

We've all heard those miraculous stories about children who have fallen through an icy pond and survive. Now, a new device mimics that effect to help people having heart attacks and stroke. The new technology is called Arctic Sun. Chilled water is pumped through sticky, hollow pillows much like blood is pumped through our veins.
Patients are heavily sedated, their body temperatures cooled to 91 degrees in an induced controlled hypothermia, slowing the metabolism of the brain and heart.
