DRUG PRICE CONTROL ORDER FLAWED, PATIENTS CAN'T ACCESS 'BEST' DRUGS

June 8, 2006

A flaw in the existing Drug Price Control Order (DPCO), which ignores the 'Superior Quality' parameter while calculating the ceiling price of drugs, may deprive patients from accessing 'best' medicines available in the country. The issue emerges from the case of price fixation by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) lowering the maximum selling price of Carbamazepine from Rs. 3,080 per kg to Rs. 2,180 per kg.
