UGANDA SUFFERING FROM FREE ARV SHORTAGE

July 5, 2006

A shortage of free antiretrovirals (ARVs) in Uganda is forcing some treatment centers to cut back on their targets, according to local reports.

Beatrice Were of the nonprofit ActionAid stated that no drugs had been procured since funding from the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria was suspended in August 2005 due to the mismanagement of funds.

Official figures show that approximately 78,000 Ugandans -- out of an estimated 140,000 who require them -- are currently accessing ARVs.
