AUROBINDO'S GENERIC ZOCOR APPROVED IN THE NETHERLANDS

December 13, 2006

Indian drugmaker Aurobindo Pharma announced it has received marketing authorization from Medicines Evaluation Board of the Netherlands for its generic simvastatin tablets, 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 mg.

This is the third approval Aurobindo has received in the Netherlands, and fifth in Europe as a whole. With this approval, it will be easier for Aurobindo to obtain similar marketing authorization for its generic simvastatin tablets in the other countries in the European Union (EU) through the mutual recognition procedure.

Simvastatin is a cholesterol-lowering drug marketed by Merck as Zocor. The drug is a lipid-lowering agent belonging to a class of medications called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, or statins.

Aurobindo has filed applications for a total of 26 products in various EU countries, several of which are nearing approval.
