FDA WARNS OF DANGERS IN ORDERING DRUGS ONLINE

February 19, 2007

Americans who attempted to purchase certain drugs over the internet instead received products containing haloperidol, a strong anti-psychotic drug, the FDA said.

The agency said it is using news of the incidents to remind U.S. consumers of the dangers of buying prescription drugs over the internet. Consumers received the products after placing orders for Ambien, Xanax, Lexapro and Ativan.

After taking the drugs, several consumers sought medical treatment for symptoms including difficulty breathing and muscle spasms. Preliminary analysis shows the drugs contain haloperidol, which can cause muscle spasms and stiffness, agitation and sedation, the FDA said. Haloperidol is the active ingredient in a prescription schizophrenia treatment.

The agency became aware of the problem after customers complained to a U.S. pharmaceutical manufacturer. The customers reported the websites where they purchased the drugs, but identifying the vendors is difficult, the FDA said. The drugs' origins are unknown, but the packages were postmarked in Greece, according to the agency.

The FDA will continue its investigation into illicit drug trading and will release more information when it is available, the agency said.
