President Nominates New CMS Administrator

May 4, 2007

President Bush nominated Kerry Weems May 3 to be administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Mark McClellan previously held the position.

McClellan announced Sept. 5, 2006, that he would resign the following month. Leslie Norwalk has been acting administrator.

Weems is a 24-year veteran of HHS, the department said. “He understands the large fiscal challenges facing Medicare and Medicaid and what it will take to strengthen and sustain those programs for the future,” the department added.
